Background of the Study
Street trading is a prevalent economic activity in many urban centers, often serving as a vital source of income for low-income residents. In Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State, street trading has flourished due to limited formal employment opportunities and the vibrancy of local markets (Ifeanyi, 2023). However, this economic activity is frequently associated with increased traffic congestion, as street vendors occupy public spaces, narrow roadways, and intersections. The resulting congestion adversely affects mobility, delays public transportation, and contributes to urban disorganization. While street trading stimulates local commerce, its unregulated nature poses significant challenges for urban planning and traffic management (Nwosu, 2024). This study examines the dual role of street trading in fostering economic activity and contributing to traffic congestion. It investigates the spatial distribution of trading activities, assesses the impact on traffic flow, and explores the potential for policy interventions that can balance economic benefits with urban order (Okafor, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Street trading in Onitsha North, while economically beneficial, has led to severe traffic congestion and urban disorganization. The occupation of public spaces by traders disrupts traffic flow, leading to delays and safety hazards for commuters. The conflict between economic activities and urban mobility necessitates an examination of the underlying causes of congestion. The study aims to identify the factors contributing to traffic problems associated with street trading and to propose policy measures that can harmonize commercial activities with efficient traffic management (Ifeanyi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of street trading on traffic congestion.
To identify spatial patterns of trading activities contributing to congestion.
To propose policy interventions that mitigate traffic issues.
Research Questions:
How does street trading affect traffic flow in Onitsha North?
What spatial factors contribute to traffic congestion from trading activities?
What policy measures can balance economic benefits and traffic management?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Street trading significantly contributes to traffic congestion.
H₂: Poor spatial planning exacerbates congestion due to trading activities.
H₃: Effective regulation of street trading reduces traffic problems.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of street trading on urban traffic congestion, providing insights for urban planners and policymakers. The findings aim to inform strategies that balance economic activity with efficient traffic management, promoting safer and more organized urban environments in Onitsha North (Nwosu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to analyzing street trading and its influence on traffic congestion within Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State, focusing on spatial and regulatory aspects.
Definitions of Terms:
Street Trading: Informal commerce conducted in public spaces.
Traffic Congestion: Overcrowding of vehicles leading to slowed or halted traffic.
Urban Planning: The process of designing and regulating land use in urban areas.
